Removal of Heavy Metals from Wastewater by Zeolite

Experimental studies have been conducted on the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater by natural zeolite as ion exchanger. The application of zeolite have been carried out in the various aspects because of its large cation exchange capacity, molecular sieving and adsorption characteristics. This paper was studied its application as adsorbent of heavy metal ions in wastwater by batch adsorption process. As results, the adsorption equilibrium took about 60 minutes. The adsorption of cadmium followed the Freundlich isotherm. In case of zeolite treated with dilute hydroxide solution, the amount of removal of heavy metal ions increased. In case of zeolite treated with dilute acid solution, the amount of removal of heavy metal ions decreased, rhe cation exchange of natural zeolite had a good effect on its removing ability and the soudium exchanged type was the most excellent. The adsorptivity was in the order of Pb(Et) > Cd(II), Cu(II). This tendency corresponds to the order of hydrated ionic radius.
