Using the Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) Model to Teach Language and Communication Skills of One Child with Autism

자폐성 장애 아동의 언어와 의사소통 기술 향상을 위한 중심축반응훈련의 효과

본 연구는 중심축 반응훈련이 자폐아동의 언어와 의사소통에 미치는 효과에 대하여 알아보는데 목적을 두었다. 연구에는 자폐아동 1명과 아동의 특수교사, 그리고 아동의 어머니가 참여하였다. 연구를 위해 단일사례설계 중 AB 연구설계 방법을 적용하고, 기초선, 중재, 일반화를 관찰하였다. 연구에 참여한 특수교사는 하루 3시간씩 총 2주 간 Koegel에 의해 개발된 중심축 반응훈련 매뉴얼을 가지고 중심축 반응 적용 훈련을 받았다. 이 훈련은 본 연구자에게 모델 소개, 적용, 피드백 제공 순으로 이루어졌다. 단일대상 연구법 중 AB 설계를 적용하여 기초선, 중재, 일반화로 관찰되었다. 기초선과 중재는 특수학급교실에서 이루어졌다. 중재 후 기간 동안 아동의 목표행동은 각기 다른 5장소에서 관찰되었다. 연구결과 아동의 목표행동인 의사소통 기능이 증가하였을 뿐 아니라, 중재상황과 다른 다섯 가지 상황에서도 의사소통 기능 수행이 일반화 되었다. 아동의 문제행동(자해행동, 자기 자극 행동, 공격적 행동)에 있어서도 그 빈도가 감소됨을 볼 수 있었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 이 연구의 제한 점과 향후 연구 방향 등에 대하여 논의하였다.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of the Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) model on language and communication skills (i.e., acquisition of words, vocabulary diversity, phonology, semantics) of one child with autism. The child’s special education teacher was trained by the researcher with the PRT training manuals published in 1989 by Koegel for two hours three days for two weeks. Then, the special education teacher applied the PRT model to the child in his classroom setting for seven weeks. During the post PRT period, the child was observed at five different places. The results indicated that the PRT model was effective in increasing language and communication skills, and the skills were also generalized. In addition, it was observed that the child’s stereotypical behaviors, such as self-injurious behaviors, self- stimulus behaviors, and aggressive behaviors, decreased substantially. Treatment implications of these findings were discussed.
