An Input-Output Analysis on the Economic Impacts of Korean Equine Industry

The equine industry attracts attentions from the central and local governments as an alternative eco-friendly industry suitable for rural revitalization as a legislation on the promotion of equine industry has recently come into effects. In this context, we attempt to investigate the present status of equine industry and its potential contribution to national economy based on Input-Output analysis. The results show that the industry occupies a significant position in national economy and can potentially play a pivotal role conducive to economic growth of national as well as livestock industry level. The direct and induced porduction volume effects are estimated to be approximately 2.9 trillion won, 0.2% of total national GDP and more than half of total livestock industry GDP. Additionally, a single Thoroughbred horse is estimated to have the asset value of about 60 million won, to provide the livelihoods for 4 persons, and to creat jobs for 2.6 persons during its 25-year lifetime. Finally, according to the analysis of production inducement effects, the horse riding sector among all other sub-sectors of the equine industry has the strongest effects.
