The Effect of Free Meal Service for Low-Income Elderly People

The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of free meal service program for low-income elderly people using the 4th and 5th KNHNES(Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) data collected during 2007-2012. We analyzed body mass index(BMI), hemoglobin level(Hb) and nutrient intakes between user group and nonuser group in free meal service for low-income eldery people. In order to reduce selection bias, both PSM (Propensity Score Matching) and CEM (Coarsened Exact Matching) methods were used. According to the matching results, treatment group had lower intakes of calcium and several essential nutrients than control group. This implies that free meal service program didn’t contribute to improve nutritional status of low-income elderly people.
