Yoga As a Process

현대 요가가 전개되고 있는 현 시점에 요가의 전모를 보다 더 잘 이해하고 파악하기 위해서는 현대 요가를 그 자체의 방식에 따라 판단할 필요가 있다. 이에 따라, 모든 요가가 예외 없이 깨달음을 그 궁극적 목적으로 한다는 ‘목적이나 결과 중심적 요가’가 아니라 ‘수단이나 과정 중심적 요가’를 제안하고자 한다. 과정 중심적 요가는 다음 이유들로부터 그 정당성을 찾을 수 있다. 첫째, 요가의 어원이나 정의는 의도적 개입이나 노력과 같은 과정적 특징들을 암시한다. 둘째, ‘요가’라는 명칭의 외연 확장은 요가가 유연적이고 가변적인 과정과 관련이 깊다는 점을 보여준다. 셋째, 특정 요가의 정체성을 결정하는 데는 요가의 기술적 측면 또는 수단이나 과정이 더 중요하다. 넷째, 요가의 핵심인 합일에서도 그 과정의 의의를 충분히 확인할 수 있다. 다섯째, 요가의 역사에서 ‘삼매와 독존 사이의 긴장’은 ‘과정으로서의 요가와 결과로서의 요가 사이의 긴장’에 다름 아니다. 여섯째, 요가 담론에서 과정 중심적인 실제 이야기가 목적 중심적인 허구의 이야기에 종속되어서는 안 된다. 결국 과정으로서의 요가는 현대 요가의 정체성을 재조정하기 위한 작은 제안이다. 과정으로서의 요가는 결과로서의 요가를 더욱 온전하게 만드는 ‘보완적 관점’으로서 요가 전개의 연속성이라는 역사적 이해에 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 과정으로서의 요가는 결과로서의 요가와 확실한 거리를 두는 ‘대안적 관점’으로서 새롭게 등장하는 현대 요가의 현상과 그 문화에 대한 현실적 이해에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

It is necessary to judge and ascertain ‘modern yoga’ in its own terms for the sake of understanding better its whole aspect at present situation. In this way one thing to be suggested is the process-oriented Yoga rather than the goal-oriented Yoga which aims at Enlightenment alone with few exceptions. The process-oriented Yoga can be justified by following reasons. First, the etymology and definition of Yoga intimates such process-oriented characteristics as intentional intervention and endeavor. Second, other open extensions of the term ‘yoga’ show the fact that Yoga has a deeper relationship with the flexible and variable process. Third, in the determination of the identity of Yoga the process or the technical aspect is more important. Fourth, the significance of process can be confirmed from the ‘union’ or ‘oneness’ which is the core of Yoga. Fifth, in the history of Yoga the tension between samādhi and kaivalya is nothing but that of Yoga as a process and as a goal. Sixth, in the discourse of Yoga the process-oriented real story must not be subordinated by the goal-oriented false story. After all, Yoga as a process is a small proposal to readjust the identity of modern yoga. Yoga as a process, being a complementary point of view in building Yoga as a goal more completely, will render service to a historical understanding that Yoga is developing in continuity. Besides, Yoga as a process, being an alternative point of view in distantiating Yoga as a goal for certain, will render service to an actual understanding on the phenomenon and culture of modern yoga appeared newly.
