‘도서관 운영’ 프로젝트를 통한 유아들의 공중 (the pubic)되기: Dewey의 공공성 개념을 중심으로

Young children s becoming the public through a project of operating a library: Based on Dewey s publicness

본 연구의 목적은 유아들이 도서관 운영 프로젝트를 통해 공중이 되는 경험의 특성을 이해하는 것이다. 이를 위해 누리유치원에서 유아가 도서관을 운영하는 프로젝 트를 실시하였으며, 2015년 11월 중순부터 2016년 2월 말까지 참여관찰, 교사 및 유아 면담, 기록물을 자료 수집하였다. 분석은 Dewey의 공공성에 대한 개념을 토대로 해석학적 방식으로 이루어졌다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아들은 직접 유치 원의 도서관을 운영하는 공중의 역할을 충실히 하여 ‘아이들의 생각하는 도서관’을 창조하였다. 시작 단계에서 유아들의 ‘내가 원하는 책을 읽고 싶다’는 바램들은 공동의 이슈가 되어, 이를 공적으로 관리할 공무원 유아들을 선출로 이어졌다. 선출된 공무원 유아들은 도서관의 ‘간접적인 혜택’을 다양한 유아들이 누릴 수 있도록 함께 생각하고 토론하고 실천하면서 도서관을 변화시켰다. 둘째, 도서관 운영 프로젝트를 통해 유아들은 공무원 역할의 자율성과 책임성을 이해하였으며 도서관에 대한 애착과 지속적인 창조의 의지를 보여주었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 공중으로써 유아들의 특성과 유아민주시민교육의 특성에 대하여 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how young children experience to become the public in their lives through the project of operating their preschool library. The study lasted from the middle of November, 2015 to the end of February, 2016. The main data collection included participation observation, interview with teachers and children, and document collection. The data were analyzed by hermeneutics approach using Dewey’s concept of publicness. With raising the issue of “we want to read the books that we want,” young children voted for officials, making a decision regarding the systems to operate the library through discussing and thinking together, and making actual changes for the library; eventually creating “Children’s Thinking Library.” Secondly, the young children as the public understood that the officials have autonomy and responsibilities to take care of the public matters. They became attached to their library and were willing to create continual changes in the library. The study discusses the characteristics of young children as the public and of democratic citizenship education for young children.
