Impact of Technology Sensemaking Capability and Management Capability on the Innovation Performance of Export Venture Firms in Korea

This paper investigates how the absorptive capacity, technology sensemaking capability, and management capability of firms influence innovation performance and are affected by environmental dynamism, such as technology turbulence, market turbulence, and competitive intensity. We studied 102 export venture firms in Korea and found that (1) environmental dynamism facilitates the development of a firm’s absorptive capacity, technology sensemaking capability, and management capability, (2) absorptive capacity positively affects the technology sensemaking capability and management capability of a firm, and (3) technology sensemaking capability and management capability positively influence a firm’s innovation performance. Further, this paper investigates the mediating role of technology sensemaking capability and management capability in the relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation performance. We found that technology sensemaking capability and management capability mediate the relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation performance. The absorptive capacity of firms did not show any direct effect on innovation performance.
