Problems and Improvement of Export Financing Support Programs for SME in Korea

The export financial support system refers to the policy about the financing required at each stage of domestic transactions and overseas transactions directly related to international import-export transactions. Since the introduction of the WTO system, the government has banned direct export support, and thus, countries have expanded their export finance and insurance systems, which appear to indirectly support exports while bypassing international regulations. Since the global financial crisis in 2008, Korean SMEs have created more jobs than large corporations, accounting for 99.9% of the total. However, the export portion of Korean SMEs is less than 30%. Since the increase of small and medium-sized exporters is directly related to the economic growth of Korea, it is essential that the policy of supporting the growth stage of the export company continuously and actively at the government level. This study suggests problems and suggests ways to improve export financing programs for SMEs in Korea through previous studies and theoretical review.
