Change and Prospects in North Korea’s Agricultural System after Accumulation Crisis

North Korea’s agricultural system had been made up of the various elements; the development strategy to run after the rapid growth, the low levels of agricultural prices, collective farm and planned marketing system, and the traditionally intensive agricultural technologies. These elements had formed the fairly strong system characterized as a kind of institutional complementarity. But, since accumulation crisis in 1990s, both change and coninuity have been observed; the scale of farm units was reduced, the number of peasant market was increasing, and agricultural technologies as in the past partly revised. Though these changes are restrictive, from the long run perspective, North Korea’s agricultural system is entering the phase of ‘adaptive evolution’.
