The purpose of this paper is to observe the importance of specialized vocabulary and the role it plays in content-based or content and language integrated learning materials such as movies. The current literature mainly focuses on specialized vocabulary for academic study (Gablasova, 2014), but this paper considers the role of specialized vocabulary in general English language learning. In order to do this, three different scenes from the movie The Thomas Crown Affair were selected. In the first scene the specialized vocabulary was subject-related and mainly used in general English. In the second scene, the specialized vocabulary was less subject-related and mainly used in the context of police work. In the third scene most of the specialized vocabulary was subject-related proper nouns. The first set of specialized vocabulary was helpful in integrating content and language learning. The second set, language expressions related to law enforcement, provided background knowledge necessary to understand the content. The third set of specialized vocabulary was helpful in simultaneously understanding content (that is, who characters were and what they were doing) and learning language expressions related to the characters. The significance of the findings for the acquisition of specialized vocabulary and the effective use of movies in language learning is discussed.
