존 듀이의 러시아 방문과 학교관 형성의 변화

John Dewey’s Visit to Russia and the Change of a School Outlook Formation

이 연구는 존 듀이의 러시아 방문이 그의 학교관 형성에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지를 밝힘으로써 그의 학교관에 대한 이해의 지평을 넓히려는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 연구자는 듀이의 중, 후기 저작들 안에 담긴 학교 관련 저서들의 내용을 분석하였다. 특히 러시아 방문이 이루어진 1928년 이후 그의 학교관에 어떠한 변화가 일어났으며, 또한 그것이 1930년대 후반에 있었던 러시아 대숙청 사건 이후 듀이의 학교관에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 1928년 그의 러시아 방문은 학교교육을 새로운 관점에서 바라볼 수 있는 중요한 계기가 되었으며 미국의 학교교육을 재검토할 수 있는 기회였다. 이러한 점에서 그에게러시아 방문은 학교를 새로운 관점에서 바라볼 수 있는 전환점이었다. 그러나 1930년대 일어난 러시아의 숙청 사건 이후 듀이는 러시아 교육에 대해 크게 실망하였으며, 러시아 방문시 가졌던 학교교육에 대한 좋은 인상마저 흐려지게 되었다. 러시아 방문과 숙청 사건은 러시아의 학교교육을 재평가하는 계기가 되기도 하였지만 자신이 몸 담고 있는 미국의 사회적 변화와 그에 대한 학교교육을 재검토하는 계기가 되기도 하였다. 1938년에 쓰인 『경험과 교육』은 러시아 방문 경험과 러시아 숙청사건 이후 종합된 그의 학교관이 잘 응축되어 있는 저작이라고 할 수있을 것이다.

This study’s aim is to broaden the horizons of John Dewey’s school outlook by revealing how his visit to Russia influenced his school outlook formation. To achieve this aim, researchers analyzed the contents of the school books contained in the middle works and later works of the Dewey. In particular, since his visit to Russia in 1928, there has been a change in the history of the Soviet Union, and in the latter half of the 1930s, researchers wanted to clarify how the school outlook changed since the Great Purges. His visit to Russia in 1928 was an important motive of the school education, and it was an opportunity to reexamine American schooling. In this point, his visit to Russia was a turning point where he viewed the school from a new perspective. However, after the Russian purges of the 1930s, Dewey was greatly disappointed in Russian education, and even a good impression on the school education he had had during his visit to Russia. Dewey’s visit to Russia and the purge case was a wake-up call for Russia s school education, but it was also an occasion to reexamine the American society and the school s educational system. Written in 1938, Experience and Education would be a highly condensed work of his Russian experience, and his view of school, combined with Russia s purges.
