숙종대 성균관 과시 운영 연구

A Study on the Operation of the Seonggyungwan-Guasi during King Sukjong s Reign(1674-1720)

본고에서는 조선후기 과시가 제도적으로 정착되어 가는 숙종대의 성균관 과시 운영의 실상을 파악하고자 했다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 숙종대 성균관 과시는 시관, 응시생, 상급 등은 규정대로 운영되었으나 시행 자체는 순탄하지 않았다. 정부의 유고나, 시관인 대제학이나 대사성이 유고하거나, 유생들의 공관으로 인하여 과시를 시행하지 못하는 경우가 있었다. 그러나 시행여부는 과시에 따라서도 차이가 났다. 정기과시를 오랫동안 시행하지 못할 때는, 특명과시를 활용하여 그를 보완할 수 있었다. 숙종대 전반에는 특명과시를 활용하여 과시의 시행을 보완하려는 노력이 드러나지 않는다. 숙종대 후반에는 특명과시를 활용하여 시행 일자가 정해져 있는 과시의 시행을 보완했다. 삼일제가 시행되지 못하는 시기에는 특명제술을, 전강이 실시되지 못하는 시기에는 친림전강이나 ‘도기 유생전강’을 실시하였다. 과시의 은사는 제술 시험에서는 별다른 변화가 없었지만, 친림전강과 ‘도기유생전강’의 경우는 후대로 갈수록 은사의 상급이 높아지고 인원도 확대되었다. 은사 중 직부전시는 식년시, 증광시, 별시에 사용하게 했던 반면, 직부회시와 급분은 식년시에만 사용하게 했다. 후대에는 식년시 시기가 뒤로 미뤄지면, 그 사이 시행된 과시에서 직부회시나 급분의 은사를 받은 이들이 당해 식년에 은사를 사용하도록 해서 은사자들을 배려했다. 숙종대 성균관 과시는 시관의 유고, 유생들의 상황, 혹은 국가의 행사로 인해서 제대로 시행하지 못하는 경우는 있었으나, 적어도 숙종대 후반에는 그것 역시 규정 안에서 보완하고자 하는 시도가 있었다. 과시를 시행하지 못해도 아무 문제가 없는 것이 아니라, 시행하지 못하는 것은 문제가 있다고 생각했기 때문에, 그와 같은 보완책을 사용한 것이다.

This study focuses on the concrete aspects of the operation of the Seonggyungwan-Guasi(課試) during King Sukjong s reign(1674-1720). During King Sukjong s reign, the Seonggyungwan-Guasi was operated according to the rules of the examiners, entrants and special benefits(恩賜). But it was not usually implemented, because there was another occasion of the dynasty in the day of Seonggyungwan-Guasi, or the examiners had the other official works, or the entrants protested against the government. King Sukjong was able to order a special Seonggyungwan-Guasi implemented for the supplementation. This supplementation was not used during the first half of King Sukjong s reign, but it was during the latter half. King Sukjong made entrants perform a special writing test after the fixed writing tests in a festive day(節日製) were not implemented for a long time. Also he made entrants perform a special oral test about Confucian classics after the fixed oral tests in the palace(殿講) were not implemented for a long time. Using this system, the special benefits improved over time and the way of using the benefits improved for the entrants. During King Sukjong s reign, the Seonggyungwan-Guasi sometimes was not implemented. But, at least, during the latter half, there were some effort for the supplementation. Because it was thought of the problem that the Seonggyungwan-Guasi was not implemented for a long time.
