이 글에서는 2009년 4월 검정합격이 발표된 자유사 발행 중학교 역사교과서의 근대사 서술을 분석하였다. 자유사판 역사교과서는 후수샤판 교과서와 내용이 거의 대부분 같다. 완전한 복제품 교과서인 것이다. 이는 문부과학성과 새역모의 합작품이다. 자신의 정치적 목표를 위해 역사교육을 이용한 것이다. 자유사판 역사교과서는 암기형을 전제로 제작되었다고 편집진 스스로 밝히고 있듯이, 학생들에게 비판적 역사의식을 함양하도록 배려하고 있지 않다. 그러나 반대로 보면 일본의 교육현실에 적응하기 위한 그들 나름대로의 노력이라고도 볼 수 있다. 자유사판 역사교과서는 일본의 논리와 사상이 존재하는 교과서라고 내세운다. 中韓隸屬史觀과 歐美追隨史觀을 극복한 교과서라고 자랑하고 있다. 공산주의 역사관을 부정하는 교과서라고 주장한다. 하지만 이러한 주장 과정에서 일본의 식민지화 위기를 과장ㆍ왜곡하고 있고, 침략은 은폐하고 있다. 아시아 민중의 고통에 눈을 감고 있다.
