박물관 전시 구성과 초등학생들의 문화 재현

Displays in Museum and Elementary School Students Representation of Culture - Focused on 4th Graders Learning cultures in the era of the Three States

본 연구는 박물관의 전시 구성과 초등학생들의 문화 재현이 어떤 관련성이 있는지를 분석하는데 있다. 국립중앙박물관의 박물관 학교 연계 프로그램에 참여한 초등학교 4학년 학생들이 삼국문화를 어떻게 체험하고 재현하는지 살펴보았다. 첫째, 학생들은 공식 재현 틀 속에서 삼국 문화를 재현했는데, 박물관 프로그램에서 선정한 유물의 테두리에서 문화를 생각했기 때문이다. 둘째, 문화는 기술과 환경이 빚어낸 결과물이고 문화 발전은 기술과 환경을 어떻게 활용하느냐에 따라 달렸다고 생각한다. 이는 전시 설명이 개개 유물의 특징을 강조하였고, 유물의 우수성을 기술과 결부지어 언급했기 때문이다. 셋째, 학생들은 문화를 사람들의 삶과 유리된 추상물로 여겼다. 이는 박물관 이야기가 시람 이야기보다는 유물 이야기를 들려주었기 때문이다. 박물관 학습은 교실 밖에 나와서 유물을 조사하고 그 유물의 의미를 깨우치는 것 자체에서 머물러서는 안된다. 왜 이 유물을 조사해야 하고, 그 유물이 박물관에 어떤 의미로 전시되어 있는지 고민해야 한다. 박물관 유물들은 스스로 말하는 법이 없다. 유물을 통해서 재현하고자 하는 박물관의 어떤 메시지가 존재할 뿐이다. 따라서 박물관에 전시되어 있는 개개 유물의 특징들을 아는 것을 넘어, 박물관이 전시를 통해서 어떤 내러티브를 만들어내고, 이를 어떻게 수용하게 하는지를 생각하는 것이 중요하다. 즉, 박물관이 유물을 통해 들려주려는 이야기의 정체를 파악하고, 이에 대항하는 여러 이야기를 만들어야 한다. 결국, 박물관에 가는 것은 하나의 문화 행위이다. 이 행위는 삶의 전략 혹은 의미를 만들어가는 실천이다. 따라서 학생들이 박물관에 가는 이유는 유물을 보러 가는 것이 아니라, 세상사는 이야기를 들으러 가는 것이어야 한다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate relationship between elementary school students representation of culture and displays in museum. The learning and representing on Cultures in the Era of the wee States of 4th graders, which participated in Program of National Museum of Korea, was analysed. First, Students represented cultures in the frame of official representation, for they thought cultures, centering on collections and artifacts selected in the Museum. Second, They considered culture as mixture of technology and environment, and thought that cultural development depends on how to use technology and environment. This was from the explanation of displays focused on individual features of artifacts. Third, they regarded culture as abstractions empty of people. This is why the narratives of museum is rather narratives of collections than those of people. Museum learning must not only put much value on individual features and meanings of artifacts. But, it set a high value on identifying narratives told by displays and making narratives counter with the narratives. Activity of going to museum is a kinds of cultural activity. This activity is signifying practice. Accordingly, Students must go to museum for listening to narratives of people.
