우리나라 뮤지컬의 산업화 역사와 발전방안에 관한 고찰

A Study on the Industrial History and Development of the Musical Theatre in Korea

이 연구는 뮤지컬이 문화예술적 측면과 산업경제적 측면에서 가지는 중요성을 감안하여 우리나라 뮤지컬의 역사를 산업화 관점에서 살펴보고 주요 문제점들을 문헌적 방법으로 조사하여 발전방안들을 제시하고자 하였다. 우리 뮤지컬의 산업화 역사는 선진국들에 비하면 일천하지만 우리나라 경제의 발달흐름과 같이 뒤늦게나마 양적·질적으로 단기간에 급속한 발전을 이루어내었다. 이 역사를 산업화 준비기(1960년대∼80년대 전반), 산업화 초기(1980년대후반∼2000년), 산업 성장기(2000년 이후)의 세 단계로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 먼저, 산업화 준비기에는 공영 예그린 악단과 소수 민간 극단들이 활동하였다. 산업화 초기에는 뮤지컬 전문극단 설립, 외부 자본 참여, 제작 전문 조직 출현 등의 현상이 시작되었다. “오페라의 유령” 초연을 계기로 산업 성장기에 들어와 시장규모가 대폭 확대되었고 시장유동성이 높아졌다. 하지만 급속성장을 하는 과정에서 불균형이 누적되면서 성장통의 여러 증상들이 나타났다. 우리나라 뮤지컬의 주요 문제점으로 해외 콘텐츠에 대한 높은 의존도, 스타 캐스팅에 대한 높은 의존도, 전문인력 부족, 수요기반 미흡, 통계자료 미비, 외부자본 부족 등을들 수 있다. 이에 우리 뮤지컬 산업의 주요 발전방안으로 작품 콘텐츠의 다양화, 전문인력 공급체계 구축, 수요기반 확충을 위한 대중화와 해외 진출 확대, 통합전산망 구축, 투자저변 확대 등의 필요성을 제시하였다. 본 연구를 통해 우리나라 뮤지컬 산업이 아직 성장기 단계에 있어서 성장통의 문제점들을 적절히 치유하면 높은 성장 잠재력을 발현시키며 지속가능한 발전을 이끌어내어 순조로운 성숙단계로 이동하는 데 성공할 수 있음을 기대할 수 있게 되었다.

This study examined the industrial history of Korea’s musical theatre. Several problems in the process are drawn and respective solutions are proposed for its development. The musical theatre in Korea has achieved, as an industry, a remarkable development in a very short time relative to other advanced countries. Its industrial history could be divided in three steps such as the preparatory period, the beginning period, and the growing period. Following are the main problems found in the musical industry : excessive dependence on foreign contents and star casting, lack of skilled manpower, insufficient demand base, lack of reliable statistical data, and insufficient external financing. The proposed solutions for the development of Korea’s theatre musical industry are as follows : contents diversification, establishment of skilled manpower supply system, popularization of the musical theatre and overseas expansion, setting of integrated computer network, and expansion of investment base. This study has found the musical theatre industry of Korea in the growing period, and made it possible to expect the industry to reveal its high growth potential as well as its sustainable development and to move smoothly to the mature period if the growing pains of the industry could be properly cured.
