운곡 정인영 창업회장의 생애와 기업가정신

The Life and Entrepreneurship of Halla Business Group Founder In-Yung Chung

본 논문은 글로벌 한라그룹을 창업하여 사업보국ž산업보국정신으로 한국 중공업화에 기여한 운곡 정인영 창업회장의 생애와 기업가정신을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 한라 그룹 창업주 정인영 회장은 창업가형 기업가답게 그의 생애를 불사르며 한라를 창업하여 키웠다. 그는 열정과 신념으로 기업을 설립하여 성장ž발전시켜 오늘날의 글로벌 한라그룹이 있게 하였고 사업보국․산업보국 정신으로 한국 근대화에 크게 기여한 인물이다. 특히, 경공업분야마저 제대로 갖추지 못했던 당시의 한국에서 누구도 꿈꾸지 못했던 중공업 건설이라는 웅대한 꿈을 창원공업단지에 현대양행(한라그룹의 전신)을 설립함으로써 글로벌 한라의 기반을 마련한 창업형 기업가이다. 그야말로 맨손과 열정만으로 성공의 신화를 창조하고 기적의 역사를 만들어낸 한국 경제발전사와 역사의 궤를 같이한 인물이다. 특히 운곡은 한국경제의 새로운 진로를 중화학공업 발전에서 찾았다. 경공업 중심의 당시 한국 산업구조를 중화학공업 중심으로 이동시키는 일이 한국경제의 도약을 위해 필요하다고 믿었다. 운곡은 기업가가 이러한 일을 하는 것이 곧 애국이라고 생각했다. 그의 세대가 국가발전을 위해 짊어져야 할 무거운 사명이라고 생각했다. 그가 기술개발과 해외시장 개척을 강조한 것도 한라그룹의 발전을 위한 것이기도 했지만 따지고 보면 사업보국․산업보국 정신의 발로였다고 볼 수 있다. 운곡의 여정에는 한국 최초라는 수식어가 붙었다. 1960년대에 한국 최초로 해외공사 수주 및 건설장비와 턴키베이스 방식의 시멘트 플랜트 수출 등이다. 그가 보여준 불굴의 투지와 정확한 판단, 강력한 추진력과 하면 된다는 불굴의 의지 없이는 불가능한 것 이었다. 위험을 무릅쓰고 포착한 기회를 사업화한 모험과 도전 정신의 발로이다. 운곡 의 기업가정신 즉, 도전정신, 사업보국․산업보국정신, 근검과 정도정신, 기술혁신중시정신, 인재중시정신이 한라그룹의 도약을 가능하게 했다. 운곡 정인영 한라그룹 창업회장은 이러한 기업가정신으로 한라그룹 100년의 기반을 닦았고 한국경제발전에 큰 족적을 남겼다.

This paper purports to examine the life and the entrepreneurship of In-Yung Chung who made a great contribution to the development of the heavy industry of Korea by establishing and running the Global Halla Group in the spirit of serving the country. He dedicated his whole life to realize his entrepreneurial dream of making the Halla Group as one of the most important corporations in the world, as well as in Korea. He appears even greater when we consider the time when he founded Hyundai Yanghaing in Changwon Industrial Complex to become the mother of the Halla Group afterward. It was a time when even light industry was not in full blossom and nobody could even imagine such an endeavor was worth trying. He started empty-handed but persisted with passion so that what he achieved in the end could be called a myth. He was a real miracle worker who carried out the Korean history of economic development. As a strategist, he foresaw that Korea had to find a new growth path directed toward developing heavy industry. He believed that, by shifting the strategic focus from light industry to heavy industry, Korea could make a jump needed to continue its economic growth and development. He thought that kind of difficult task was what a business leader was supposed to perform as a way of loving his country. Also, he took it as a mission his generation was destined to carry out. His endeavor to conduct a series of technical innovations and to expand into foreign markets was rooted not only in his desire to make his company grow but also his deep love for his country. His business achievement is often described with the phrase like ‘the first record in the Korean business history’. Actually, he was the first to participate in the project conducted outside of Korea in the 1960s. Also, he was the first to export construction equipments and a cement plant on turn-key base. His achievement would not have been possible without his unbeatable will-power, accurate judgement, strong initiatives, and incredibly strong notion of self-efficacy. It was President Chung s entrepreneurship consisting of spirit of challenge, spirit of paying back to the mother country by developing business and industry, spirit of thrift, spirit of following the right paths, emphasis on technical development and innovations, and finally trust on human talents. All of those components in combination made possible the leap and jump of the Halla Group. President Chung s values and entrepreneurship, thus, lay a foundation for the Halla Group s 100 years progress and left a big footprints in the economic development of Korea.
