한국 모바일게임 산업의 성장사 연구

The Growth History of Mobile Game Industry in Korea

본 연구에서는 최근 한국 게임산업의 주역으로 부상하고 있는 모바일게임 산업의 성장과정을 고찰하고, 시사점을 도출하였다. 한국 모바일게임 산업은 1999년 시작된 이래 약 15년의 짧은 기간동안 1조원 규모의 글로벌 산업으로 급속히 성장했다. 이 기간동안 기술적 발전을 포함한 급격한 환경의 변화가 있었지만, 이에 대한 산업사적 고찰은 매우 부족하다. 본 논문에서는 한국 모바일게임 산업의 성장 과정을 모바일게임 산업이 형성되는 도입기, 다운로드 게임을 중심으로 모바일게임 산업이 본격 성장하는 성장기, 이동통신사 중심의 폐쇄적 생태계에서 성장률이 하락했던 정체기, 스마트폰과 앱마켓을 통해 생태 계가 재편된 전환기, 그리고 소셜네트워크의 등장과 플랫폼간의 경쟁이 치열해지는 현재까지 5단계로 구분해 문헌연구와 인터뷰를 통해 정리해 보았다. 이러한 모바일게임 산업의 성장사 연구를 통해서, 기술적 발전 속도가 빠른 산업에서의 산업환경 변화에 대한 대응의 중요성, 글로벌 플랫폼 경쟁에서 나타나는 생태계 차원의 경쟁과 동반성장의 중요성, 글로벌 산업으로 전환되는 과정에서의 기회와 위협 및 정부 정책에 대한 시사점을 도출하였다.

The objective of this study is to research the growth history of mobile game industry in Korea and find implications for the future. Korean mobile game industry has grown to become a main part of gaming industry since it started in 1999. As a high velocity industry, mobile game industry has experienced very radical environmental changes which are worthy of making a historic research despite its short history. The history of mobile game industry can be divided in five phases; In the beginning phase, mobile game using mobile phone and wireless internet has been introduced. In the growth phase, the market has rapidly expanded with the popularity of downloadable VM games, and in plateau phase, growth rate has been slower. In transition phase, smart-phone and application market transformed the fundamental industry structures. Finally, in current stage, with the popularity of social network platforms such as Kakao talk, competition among platform is occurred. Through the historic review of Korean mobile game industry, this study derives several implications for managers and policy makers; environmental adaptation in high velocity industry, ecosystematic development in the global competition for platform initiatives, adaptation of companies and authorities in the transformation process from domestic industry to global industry.
