A STUDY ON THE CHINESE PEARL RIVER DEL T A REGIONAL ECONOMY AND HISTORICAL TRANSFORMATION: Historical Approach on Path -dependence

After economic reform and open policy, China • mplemented the special economic zone(SEZs) in the Pearl Rlver Delta. Along line with this policy, Everγ active member in the Delta has proceeded a regionaI economic development on the basis of the speCÎal policy derived from the Chinese govemment, and carried on outward economic development strategy. 1n the process of historical reform and open policy, the government constructed new relationship with Hong Kong and Macao, and practiced expoπ driven open policy with focus on manufacturing industry. This kind of strategy brought about the institutional path- dependence as well as tbe fonnation of regional cooperative economy including the divisional relationship among Hong Kong and Macao. In particular, the Delta zone led 10 the development models of Donguan, Shunde, Zhongsan and Nanhai. As the result, this 1nstitutional path contributed to upgrade the industrial structure in the Pearl River Delta and to restructure the De1ta economy
