This paper constructs an extended version of a Cournot competition model with a market-share VIE and explores the effects of opening the Korean rice market with the VIEs on price, quantity supplied, and welfare. The introduction of the VIEs does not promote competition but strengthen the oligopolistic structure of the domestic market. Domestic consumers are expected to be the greatest beneficiaries of the VIEs. The VIEs would improve social welfare. However, the welfare gain diminishes as the foreigners` share goes up.
