보수주의적 혁신가로서 피터 드러커 경영사상의 형성과 전개

Shaping and Developing the Management Thoughts as a Conservative Innovator-Peter F. Drucker

피터 드러커는 1909년부터 2005년까지의 전 생애에 걸쳐 30여 권의 저술을 통해 ‘현대 경영의 시조’, 또는 ‘법인 사회를 발명한 사람’이라는 칭송을 받아왔다. 이 논문은 드러커 탄생 100 주년을 맞아 그의 경영사상의 형성과 전개과정을 탐색해 보고자 하는 것이다. 드러커의초기 저술인 ‘경제인의 종말(1939)’과 ‘산업인의 미래(1942)’는 그의 사회·정치사상을 담고 있다. ‘경제인의 종말’은 1930년대 유럽 사회가 왜 파시즘 전체주의에 빠져들게 되었는지를 탐색하면서, 그 중요한 원인으로서 중상주의적 전통에 뿌리를 둔 ‘경제인의 원리’라는 경제 지상주의의 만연을 들었다. ‘산업인의 미래’에서는 새로운 사회의 구조적 변화의 기초로서 대기업 법인의 역할을 강조하면서, 대기업이 자신의 합법성을 정당화함으로써 ‘기능하는 사회 (functioning society)’로의 발전에 기여하기 위한 제반 논의를 담고 있다. 이들 초기 두 저술은 이후 드러커로 하여금 보수주의적 혁신가로서의 관점을 갖게 했고, 그의 경영 마인드 전개의 토대가 되었다. 본 연구는 우선 드러커 경영사상의 전개과정을 그의 성장과정의 주요 사건을 바탕으로 사례연구 방식으로 서술했다. 이어서 그의 초기 저술에 나타난 드러커 경영사상의 주요 토대를 형성한 세 가지 테마를 도출했는데, 이는 첫째, 사회 변화는 보수주의적 접근에 의해야 한다는 것, 둘째, 새로운 다원화 시대를 맞이하기 위해서는 ‘경제인의 원리’를 뛰어 넘는 정신적 가치가 정립되어야 한다는 것, 그리고 셋째, 근로자에게 ‘직장 시민권’을 부여해야 한다는 것으로 요약된다. 이는 결국 사회를 구성하는 주요 주체들, 예컨대 국가, 기업, 개인이 ‘정당성’있는 역할과 권력 행사를 해야 한다는 것을 말한다. 이어서 본 논문에서는 도출된 세 주제에대하여 전환기 이후의 새 시대에 부합하는 해법을 논의하였다. 드러커의 견해를 토대로 판단하건대, 현재 사회는 격변기의 중간에 있으며 이 격변기를 지나 지식경제가 심화되고 다원화 시대에 접어들게 될 것이다. 따라서 현재는 다가오는 새 시대에 적합한 접근과 사고방식을 정립하고 폭넓은 합의점을 찾는 일이 무엇보다도 중요한 시기이다. 이 시점에 현대 경영의 정립에 큰 기여를 한 피터 드러커의 경영 사상에 대해 깊이 음미해 보는 것은 다가오는 새 시대를 대비한 준비로서 의미 있는 일일 것이다.

Peter F. Drucker was recognized as ‘the father of modern management’ and as ‘the man who invented the corporate society’ by his more than 30 literatures which had been published during his life, from 1909 to 2005. The purpose of this study is to explore the process of shaping and developing the management thoughts of Peter F. Drucker in commemoration of the centennial which marks his 100th birthday. The first two books -‘The End of Economic Man(1930)’ and ‘The Future of Industrial Man(1942)’ are about social and political issues. ‘The End of Economic Man’ explored the cause of how the European society floundered into the totalitarian Fascism, and suggested as an important cause ‘the principle of economic man’ which had been rooted as long from mercantilistic tradition. ‘The Future of Industrial Man’ singled out the large corporation as the foundation of structural change for the new society, and explored how it would contribute to make a ‘functioning society’ by justifying its legitimacy. In this manner these two early stage books enhanced him toward a conservative innovator and became a basement of his future managerial mentality. This study first described the process of shaping his management thoughts by analyzing the incidents of his early life. Next it derived three themes which are thought to constitute main pillars of Peter F. Drucker’s managerial philosophy; they are, we must follow conservative approach in changing the society, we need a new mental value to substitute ‘the principle of economic man’ to meet the coming pluralistic society, and we should endow the workplace citizenship to the workers. These issues can be summarized as a way to make a ‘functioning society’ which will be possible by exercising their legitimate power and role of the major social institutions like nation, corporate, and individual. This study also explored implications of these three themes in order to meet the next society which will follow this turbulent times. Judging in light of Peter F. Drucker’s view, present is in the middle of the turbulent period which will be followed by a new information economy and pluralistic society. Therefore it is important to seek new mental values which will fit to the coming era. So it would be worthwhile to think about Peter F. Drucker’s managerial philosophy at this point in time in an effort to prepare next society.
