Management Improvement of Rice Farming Introducing Bench - marking Method in Korea

The objective of this study is to suggest the improvement strategies for rice farming by offering the guidelines for bench-making based upon FSR(farming systems research) approach. In order to analyze the management performance of rice farms, a total of 120 farmers were selected by farm size, that is, less t㏊n 1㏊, 1∼3㏊, 3∼5㏊, 5∼10㏊, and larger t㏊n 10㏊. Factors affecting the rice farming were identified and analyzed by comparing two extremely inefficient and highly efficient rice farm groups in terms of net income and production cost. The average income of the upper efficient farm group was 36.6% higher than that of the lower 25% of the farm group. There seems to be a wide variation in terms of efficiency in farm management, even within the same category of farm scale and area. The relatively efficient (low-cost) farm group reduced production cost by 27.0%, compared to the relatively inefficient (high-cost) farm group. It appears that both efficient use of farm machineries and reduction of labor input are important in reducing the operating costs of rice farming. Results of correlation analysis between direct cost and labor and machinery cost was 0.968, and labor hours was 0.841, respectively. In sum, enhancement of competitiveness could be achieved through enlargement of farm size, efficiency improvement of farm machinery use, enhancing managerial capacity on the part of rice farmers, and development of the bench-marking method in order to innovate the farm management.
