방글라데시 이주노동자의 한국 이주와 영구정착 과정

Processes of Migration and Permanent Settlement with Particular Reference to Bangladeshi Migrant Workers in Korea

이 연구는 국내 방글라데시 출신 이주노동자를 대상으로 ‘민족지적 연구’(ethnographic research)를 수행하여 방글라데시 이주노동자의 한국으로의 이주 요인을 분석하고, 일부 이주노동자가 다양한 경로로 국내에 장기 체류를 통해 영구정착 하는 과정과 전략을 규명하고 있다. 방글라데시 이주노동자들은 한국의 고용 안정, 양호한 노동 조건 및 높은 임금, 정치적 안정과 종교적 자유, 자유로운 사회생활 등을 경험하면서 한국에 영구정착하는 길을 모색하고 있다. 이들은 한국 국적 소지자와의 결혼, 비자변경, 사업투자, 난민신청 등을 이용해 영구정착과 장기 체류에 성공하고 있다. 국내에 장기체류자가 급증하고 있는 상황에서 이주노동자의 장기체류와 영구정착도 늘어가기 때문에 이들의 정착요인과 과정에 대한 규명에도 관심을 기울여야 할 것으로 사료된다.

This study aims at doing ethnographic research on Bangladeshi migrant workers’ immigration backgrounds and their processes and strategies for permanent settlement in Korea. Some of Bangladesh migrant workers prefer to stay in Korea permanently, considering some political, economic, and social factors in Korea like high employment and salary, good conditions of workplace, political and economic stability, and secularism. Actually quite numbers of Bangladeshi migrant workers got permanent residentship through various strategies and processes such as getting marriage to Korean nationals, investing money in small business, changing stay status, and applying refugee status. Given the gradual increase in numbers of foreign permanent settlers in Korea, it is very necessary to explore the factors of foreign migrant workers’ processes of permanent settlement.
