마을벽화를 통한 지역정체성 구현과 주민 인식 분석

A Study of Revealing Regional Identity of the Mural Village and the Residents’ Perceptions: Focused on the Comparison between Nambu-Village and Saemter-Village

본 연구는 외부적으로 범주화된 ‘탄광마을’로서의 정체성을 가지고 있는 두 마을에서 벽화에 구현한 장소정 체성이 상이하게 나타난 것에 주목하였다. 벽화를 통한 지역정체성의 범주화 양상과 주민 인식의 차이를 분석한 결과, 두 마을의 상이함은 내부적 범주화 과정의 차이에서 기인한 것으로 보인다. 남부마을의 벽화주제는 ‘탄광’ 으로 외부적으로 범주화된 지역정체성과 잠재된 내부적 정체성에 모두 부합되는 선택이었다. 반면 샘터마을은 남부마을과의 차별화를 위해 내부적으로 지역정체성을 범주화하여 전설이라는 새로운 소재를 활용하였다. 인터 뷰 결과, 남부마을에 형성된 탄광벽화는 주민들의 삶의 경험과 일치하여 주민들이 벽화에 깊게 감정이입하였다. 탄광벽화는 과거를 현실에 가시화하여 주민들의 내부에 잠재되어 있던 탄광마을의 정체성을 강화시켰다. 샘터마 을에 형성된 전설벽화는 주민들의 삶의 경험과 일치하지 않아 남부마을 주민들처럼 자기 정체화가 강하게 나타 나지는 않았으며, 상대적으로 주민 커뮤니티 활성화에 영향을 미쳤다. 이는 향후 벽화마을 조성에 있어서 내부적 /외부적 범주화 관점을 함께 고려할 필요가 있음을 시사하고 있다.

We investigate the different perspectives of regional identity that two adjacent villages expressed in the murals. Nambu village and Saemter village have same origin, history and regional identity by external categorization as miner villages, but they produced different murals. Nambu village’s mural represented realistic miner`s life based on their old regional identity of ‘miner village’, because it is widely and traditionally known as a miner village externally and Nambu villagers lived here as a miner. In Saemter village, the residents internally categorized their new regional identity as ‘legend village’. This alternative was to make their village different from Nambu village. The content of miner mural is same with the Nambu villagers’ life, so villagers did empathy to the mural. Miner mural make their identity as a miner village more strong. However, Saemter villagers actually did not experience the ‘legend’, so they did not empathy to mural. Instead, ‘legend mural’ influence their regional community. It means that the different murals of those villages were attributable to complex external/internal categorizations of their regional identity.
