‘차이나는’ 지리로서 풍수와 Geography의 정상화와 타자화

The Normalization and Otherization of Fengshui and the Modern Geography

현재 한국사회에는 각기 차이나는 두 종류의 지리 즉 근대 이전 정상 지리로 유지돼 왔던 ‘풍수’와 현재 지리 하면 일상적으로 떠올리는 ‘서구의 근·현대 지리(Geography)’가 공존하고 있다. 주지하다시피 이들 서로 대비되는 두 종류의 지리는 그 관점이나 내용의 차이(‘존재의 층위’)에도 불구하고 현실적 차원에서 엄연한 위상 차이(‘사회적 층위’)를 갖고 있다. 이에 먼저 근대 이전 풍수의 위상을 탐색해 보았는데, 관련 문헌을 통해 확인된 내용은 공통적으로 고려시대와 조선시대 공유되었던 지리(또는 지리학)가 풍수와 다르지 않음을 제시해 주고 있다. 이것은 결국 풍수가 현재의 Geography와 마찬가지로 근대 이전 정상 지리의 위상을 차지하고 있었음을 말해주는 것이다. 다음으로 현재적 상황에서 확인되는 풍수와 Geography 간의 현실적 위상 차이의 형성 과정을 두 지리 간의 정상화·타자화 과정을 통해 살펴보았는데, 최초의 근대 신문인 『한성순보』(1883년 창간)에서 일단의 실마리를 찾을 수 있었다. 이것은 19세기 말을 전후하여 그동안 정상 지리로 유지돼 온 풍수가 새로 등장한 Geography와 공존하며 점차 타자화되고 동시에 Geography가 풍수를 대신해 정상 지리로의 위상 변화를 시작하였음을 보여주는 것이다.

Currently, there are two types of geography in Korea: ‘fengshui’ which had been maintained as a normal geography before modern times, and ‘the modern geography’. As we all know, these two types of geography contrast with each other in terms of their differences in perspective and content, but they have a status difference on a realistic level. First, I have searched for the status of fengshui before modern times through the related literatures. Almost all of literatures suggest that geography shared in the Goryeo Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty was not different from fengshui. This means that fengshui, like current geography, occupied the status of the pre-modern normal geography. Next, I examined the formation of the actual status difference between fengshui and the modern geography, which is confirmed in the present situation, through normalization and otherization process between two geographies. In the first modern newspaper “Hanseongsoonbo” (published in 1883) I could find the interesting clues. This shows that fengshui coexisted with the newly introduced modern geography around the end of the 19th century, gradually becoming an alternative, and the modern geography started to change its status to normal geography instead of fengshui.
