In this article, we examine the Rightist Slant in Japan, which has been gradually aggravated in the 2000s, as well as its conceptual basis, the Bushido, for the purpose of systematically clarifying how the writers of the contemporary Japanese literature recognize the Bushido and how they represent it in their literary works. We also attempt to capture how the recognition of the Bushido by these writers affects the Rightist slant in Japan in various respects. The Bushido is known to represent the traditional Japanese spirit. Historically speaking, since the Bushi appeared in the history of Japan, the content of the Bushido has changed itself. The current Bushido emerged to represent the spirit of the modern nation during the Meiji era; in particular, Shiba Ryotaro presented the new representation of the Bushido in his various works. The Bushido conceptualized in his work “Ryoma-ga-Iku(Ryoma goes)” consist of, among other things, living beautifully and following through on one’s intention until he/she dies. We conclude that this notion of the Bushido presents a typical case of the modern concept of bushi and corroborates the past Meiji, which, together with other factors, led to the current Rightist slant.
