Entrepreneurship of the Toyoda Family - Toyoda Kiichiro and Toyota Motor

1. Toyoda Sakichi, inventor – entrepreneur S. Toyoda(1868-1930), father of K. Toyoda, as well known distinguished industrial inventor and entrepreneur in Japan. After visiting Industrial Exhibition in the 1880, He became mania of invention, and being successful in improving and inventing small power loom in the 1890s-1900s. Although Mitsui gave assistance to him to establish Toyota Loom Co., S. Toyada was thoroughly personal entrepreneur in his life. 2. Career of Toyoda Kiichiro K. Toyoda(1884 – 1952), an eldest son of S. Toyoda, after graduation from Tokyo University, Engineering Department, entered into father’s business. He joined with invention of power loom, finally invented Toyota Automatic Loom in the late 1920s. Visiting England in 1929, K. Toyoda was shocked by seeing decline of textiles industry. 3. Challenge to making passenger car In the 1829’s import of automobile made in USA, had been rapidly increasing in Japan. Believing in coming of the age of car, he made his decision to advance into passengers car production in the early 1930’s. Government gave licence on motor vehicle production to Toyoda and Nissann. He persuaded T. Risabuto (brother in low. Toyota Loom Co.) on this. 4. Founding Toyoda Motor Co. In 1937, K. Toyoda established TMC, financed by Toyoda’s assets, and constructed the large Koromo(present Toyoda) plant near Nagoya. He advocated the original ideas of “Just on Time”. “Creation on Shop Floor” and “ Adaptation on Management”, from which the definite practices of Toyada Stystem have developed. Management of TMC was contrasting to Nissan, emulated American management. 5. Set-back of K. Toyoda’s entrepreneurship in the War Initial development of TMC was broken down by the coming of economic control. Since 1939, production of military truck was forced by allocated materials. 6. Reconstruction of TMC after the Second War In 1948, passenger car production in TMC under the leadership of K. Toyoda reconstructed. But, TMC faced serious difficulties, such as short of materials as well as capital and labour disputed, K. Toyada was forced the resign in 1950 and passed away in 1952. However TMC has rapidly successfully its Toyota System.
