지역사회 연구의 분석단위와 지표에 관한 고찰

Towards an Ecological Approach to Local Community Research

본 연구는 지역사회 연구의 방법론 쟁점들을 통해 생태학적 접근의 유의미성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 분석단위로서의 근린사회에 대한 개념정의, 센서스와 사회지표를 이용한 지역선정, 지역사회 내생변수로서 사회·제도적 과정의 측정지표들에 대한 평가와 계량생태학적 접근의 함의를 소개함으로써 지역사회 연구에서 고려되어야 하는 기본적 사항들을 다루었다. 고전과 신 고전 생태적 방법론으로부터 출발한 근린사회 분석단위는 자연지역과 사회지역 그리고 공간분석 방법을 통해 주민 삶의 지역적 차이들을 설명하는데 주요한 틀로 연구되어 왔으며, 최근 근린사회효과 연구들은 사회문제의 배경으로 근린사회의 생태적 정치경제적 맥락 뿐 아니라 집합 적 사회화, 무질서, 응집력, 사회자본과 같은 특정 공간의 사회관계적 요인들에 주목하고 있다. 한편 계량생태학적 접근은 지역사회 연구의 레벨이슈들에 대안적 해결방법을 제안하고 있어, 이를 통한 근린사회 측정의 신뢰도와 타당도를 높이고 있다. 따라서 지역사회 연구에서 생태적 방법론의 적용은 주민들 삶의 공간에서의 불평등을 둘러싼 구조와 프로세스를 분석하는데 보 다 엄밀하고 적합한 방식이며, 지역사회 연구자들이 적극적으로 활용해야할 기술이다.

This research reviews and synthesizes the methodological issues of neighborhood studies. Ecological literature has examined natural area and social area as a unit of analysis and assessed how ecological indices relate to social organizations. Moving beyond traditional debate of ecological factors of neighborhood, this research evaluated social interactional and institutional factors in neighborhood and tried to account for neighborhood level variations in a variety of individual results. This research also discussed a set of methodological problems of neighborhood effects, with special attention to reliability and validity. Ecometirics would be one of the solution with promising strategies and directions for future research. Highlighting how to deal with neighborhood unit, neighborhood measures, and ecometics, this research concludes that ecological strategies address the challenges of studies of local community.
