Recently, interest regarding the Halal industry in Korea has been increasing. The general meaning of Halal does not only encompass food or goods which are permitted under Islamic law (Shariah), but also finance, logistics as well as other aspects that influence ones daily life. In Korea however the notion of Halal is still not clear and the recognition of Halal certification is also yet to be established. In the Quran, the Islamic holy book, the term Halal is used to describe what is permitted for Muslims. Things that are not Halal fall in to the category of Haram (that which is prohibited), such as the prohibition of alcohol and gambling (Quran, 2:219). Certain foods such as pork or dead meat among others also fall outside of the Halal category as described in the following verse of the Quran: “He hath forbidden for you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of the swine and that which any other name hath been invoked besides Allah (God). But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgression due limits, then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful” (Quran, 2:173; Translation by Yusuf Ali). This study aims to elucidate the notions of Halal and Haram according to Islamic beliefs and clarify the reasons why Halal certification is so important for trade in the Muslim world.
