The muscle extracts of the ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi cultured at the southern coast near Chungmu (St.1) and the eastern coast near Pohang (St.2) of Korea, were analyzed for extractive nitrogen, free and combined amino acids. nucleotides and related compounds, quaternary ammonium bases, and guanidino compounds using specimens collected in December, 1988 and in April, 1989, and compared for those contents with various size(growth) of samples. The content of extractive nitrogen in large size was apparently higher than those in small and medium size collected at St.2 in spring season. However the difference in extractive nitrogen was very small between medium and large size collected at St.1 in winter and spring seasons. The pattern of free amino acids distribution was similar between medium and large size at St.1 in both seasons, and among small, medium and large at St.2 in spring season, but it can be seen that large ascidians tended to contain more free amino acids in the muscle. Comparison of nuclecotides and related compounds also indicated that the total amount of them was size-dependent in every similarly to extractive nitrogen and free amino acids. As for betaines, no apparent difference by size was not seen in the contents of glycinebetaine, homarine and trigonelline. However, a clear difference by size was observed in halocynine ; the bigger the size of ascidian, the higher the content of halocynine. In proximate composition of the muscles, the moisture content of small, medium and large size collected at St.2 decreased and the protein and glycogen contents increased with increase of size.
