The physical conditions of the red tide outbreak in Jinhae Bay were examined using currents, sea water temperature and salinity measurement data during the summer. Masan Bay, Kohyun Bay and Wonmun Bay, in which the red tide have been frequently occurred for the last decade, has kept good physical condition for the increase of the red tide organisms. Therefore in these small inner bays the red tide could occur at anytime by the upwelling of oxygen deficient water masses due to a strong wind action. The red tide was more likely to occur in Masan Bay during the neap tide than during the spring tide because the horizontal dispersion coefficient at the neap tide was less than the critical dispersion coefficient. Masan Bay and the western part of Jinhae Bay are believed to hold the possibility of the red tide occurring if only the north or east wind blows strongly. It is supported by the fact that when a strong north wind blew, the red tide was occurred in Changsungpo Bay, and then the upwelling was observed by Kim(1994b) in the northern part of Jinhae Bay. The dimensionless quantity of 2h₁Ri*/L (analogous to Wedderburn number) in Wonmun Bay was 0.016, which was less than 12 of the critical value for the upwelling of oxygen deficient water masses by Yoon(1994).
