Meterological factors and catch fluctuation of set net grounds in the coastal waters of Yosu

In order to investigate the relation between the environmental properties and the catch fluctuation of set net fishing grounds located in the coastal waters of Yosu, meterological data of Yosu were investigated from Yosu meterological station, and the data obtained were compared with meterological ones from Yosu meterological station and the catch ones from the joint market of Yosu fisheries cooperative society, both from 1988 to 1994. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1, For Yosu bay was a coastal shallow water, the fishing grounds was influenced largely by atmospheric phenomena such as air temperature, precipitation, wind, etc.. 2, The monthly mean precipitation in the district of Yosu showed difference among the years, but its maximum was made in Jun. to Aug. The wind direction most in frequency was northwesterly in winter and spring, southwesterly in summer, and northwesterly in autumn. During the period of investigation the typhoon warning and the storm alert were issued least and the typhoon alert most. 3, The fishes caught by the set nets were arranged in order of catch as follows : Spanish mackerel ＞ Horse mackerel ＞ Sardine ＞ Anchovy ＞ Hair tail. The catches of Anchovy and Sardine were high in Apr. to May and those of Hair tail in Jun. to Jul, but Spanish mackerel and Horse mackerel were caught for whole period of fishing. Spanish mackerel was caught most in Sep. and least in Apr. 4. During heavy weather, the most catch was produced in the day before the occurrence of the weather. In the first quater and the last quater of the moon comparatively high catches were made, but the catches were low in full moon and the last day of the month. That is, the catches were high in neap and low in spring.
