It has been well known that the flows around Sinji Is. in the southwest coast of Korea are basically dominated by tidal currents. Studying the characteristics of flow patterns on the various tidal conditions around the east of Sinji Is., numerical model experiments and tidal currents observations were carried out. By using the numerical model of two-dimmensional depth intergrated type, tidal currents were simulated and those were compared with the field data. Tidal currents from the model experiments and the field observations are as follows; In flood current, the westward oceanic waters from the south of Sangildo Is. are separated into the south and the north at the southeast coast of Sinji Is.. Some of the northward currents pass through Jangjik Channel going round the east and the north coast of Sinji Is. and others flow along the southeast of Choyakto Is.. Its maximum speed averaged around Sinji Is. was about 100 ㎝/s. In ebb current, the southeastward currents from jangjik Channel and the southward currents from Janggodo Channel between Choyakto Is. and Sangilto Is. are joined together at the east of Sinji Is.. An anticyclonic eddy presumed by the cause of the coastal topography is shown in the east of Sinji Is.. The averaged maximum current speed around Sinji Is. was about 50 ㎝/s.
