Observations on the community structure of phytoplankton were carried out in Hwatae and Dura coastal waters of the southern Kamak bay, Korean south sea during four seasons in 1994. A total of 60 species of phytoplankton belonged to 35 genera was identified. Seasonal succession of dominant species was evident in Hwatae and Dura coastal waters; Eucampia zodiacus, Chaetoceros spp. in winter, Skeletonema costatum in spring, Scrippsiella trichoidea in summer and Chaetoceros spp., Bacillaria paxillifer in autumn, respectively. The standing crops of phytoplankton fluctuated with an annual mean of 4.5×10⁴ cells/ l between 1.8×10³cells/ l in autumn and 2.3×10⁵cells/ l in winter. Densities of the phytoplankton cell number by the samples of Hwatae and Dura coastal area ranged from 2.2×10⁴cells/ l to 2.3×10⁵cells/ l in winter, from 1.2×10⁴ cells/ l to 6.7×10⁴ cells/ l in spring, from 4.8×10³cells/ l to 2.1×10⁴cells/ l in summer and from 1.8×10³cells/ l to 2.7×10⁴cells/ l in autumn. The communities structure of phytoplankton in Hwatae and Dura coastal waters appered to very simple species composition, where was not dominant species of phytoplankton except a diatom, Eucampia zodiacus, in winter and the cell density of phytoplankton was very low. And phytoplankton community occupied with diatoms and also phytoplankton standing crops was high in the lower temperature seasons. On the other hand in the high temperature seasons, phytoplankton community occupied with phytoflagellates, and also phytoplankton standing crops was low.
