Hypotaurine, a precursor of taurine, was found in tissues of the ascidian Halocynthia roretzi in Korea. Distribution in tissues, seasonal variation, correlation of taurine, and contribution of hypotaurine nitrogen to extractive nitrogen were investigated bimonthly in the ascidian. The contents of hypotaurine in the extracts of ascidian tissues were 19.1~139.4㎎/100g(average 59.7㎎) and a marked seasonal variation was found in the ascidian tissues. The highest value of hypotaurine appeared in April specimens and the lowest value appeared in August ones for a year. The highest value of hypotaurine appeared in the liver extract and the lowest value appeared in the gill extract for a year. The amount of hypotaurine was 2.9~20.7%(average 8.7%) of taurine in the extracts. The relationship between the hypotaurine content(X) and taurine content(Y) of ascidian was shown as follows; Y=3.9708X+446.1372(r=0.5592). The content of hypotaurine nitrogen was 2.4~17.8㎎/100g(average 7.7㎎) and the contribution of hypotaurine nitrogen to extractive nitrogen in the ascidian tissues was 1.1~7.0%(average 3.1%). The relationship between the sampling season and the hypotaurine contents, and the ascidian tissues and the hypotaurine contents were highly significantly different(p<0.01).
