The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between integumentary development and habitat in the teleost. Integumentary structures of eight teleost (Pholis nebulosa, Takifugu niphobles, Limanda yokohamae, Paralichthys olivaceus, Lateolabrax japonicus, Sebastes schlegeli, Trichiurus lepturus, Uraspis helvola) were examined by means of the histological methods. Integument of examined all species consists of epidermal and dermal layer. And the epidermal layer consists of supporting cells, mucous cells and other accessory cells. Epidermal layer of the coastal fish is more developed than that of the pelagic fish. And the mucous cells and accessory cells are more abundant in the coastal fish. This result suggests that the coastal fishes are adopted the cellular response to environmental stimuli, but the pelagic fishes are adopted the escaping response in individual level.
