Subjective effects of alcohol involve multiple neurotransmitter and their receptors. Dopaminergic systems, especially those found in the mesolimbic areas, seem to mediate the reinforcing action of alcohol. Dopaminergic agents, however, have not proven as effective as first predicted. The achievement of long-term abstinence by chronic alcoholics following detoxification presents difficulties, and there are few helpful drugs. Tiapride, a dopamine D2 antagonist, has been reported in a number of European studies to be effective in this regard. Author reviewed the pharmacology and therapeutic potential of tiapride in the management of alcoholism.
