This study compared the age/gender norms and perceptions of drinking between alcoholics and nonalcoholics via interview and questionnaire. Age norms included acceptable drinking levels for the following age groups:16, 21, 40, and 60, both male and female. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Alcoholics were less tolerant in drinking in all categories(especially young males and females) than nonalcoholics. 2) The rank of order of acceptance of drinking by age/ ender of alcoholics was highest for a 40-year-old male, followed by a 60-year-old male, a 40-year-old female, and a 21-yearold male. However of nonalcoholics it was highest for a 40-year-old male, followed by a 40-year-old female, a 21-yearold male, and a 60-year-old male. The lowest acceptance of drinking was for adolescents, especially females in both groups. 3) Both groups showed a greater tolerance level for males than for females drinking. 4) Alcohlics showed a greater displeasure for facial flushing than nonalcoholics.
