Exploration had in fact a greater currency amongst its armchair arbiters in the geographical societies of europe than it did amongst their emissaries in the field. Geographical exploration almost inevitably means exploration by Europeans, who have accomplished this on a vast scale, worldwide. The knowledge of their discoveries has been widely disseminated by modern techniques. In search of gold and the mythical christian kingdom of prester john, portugal sent explorers into the uncharted atlantic ocean. In 1488 the portuguese ships rounded tile cape of good hope for the first time and entered the waters of indian ocean. The route to the east and the spice markets was now open. A new era commenced following his expedition. From the early sixteenth century, a lone-lived portuguese trading empire was established in the east. Spices and gold were one of the pressing motives that persuaded the spanish and portuguese navigators from Vasco da Gama to Columbus and Magellan, to risk voyages through unknown ocean.
