Objects:This study was designed to investigate stress perception and coping strategies of families of pathological gambling patients who were members of Gamblers Anonymous. Methods: The author surveyed 42 subjects of the spouses of pathological gambling patients and 42 age-matched normal wives as a control group. The authors administered a self-report using an eight item questionnaire, GARS (global assessment of recent stress scale) for measurement of stress perception, and a thirty item questionnaire which measures coping strategies. Results:The result showed that the spouses of pathological gambling patients perceived more financial stress than other stress categories. And they used more active coping, more emotional coping, and more wishful coping strategies compared to the normal control group. Conclusion:These data may suggest the need for more social and psychiatric supports in the families of pathological gamblers.
