Many advances in the conceptualization of addiction as a disease of the brain have come from the application of imaging technologies directly in the human substance abuser. Recently new knowledge has been driven by advances in rediotracer design and neurochemistry such as PET and SPECT. The neurochemistry of addiction has been studied with PET and SPECT and similarities between all drugs of abuse have been found such as reduced rCBF and changed neurotransmitters and recepters. The evidence derived from these advances in neruoimaging is likely to herald the new treatment plan and prediction of relaps. Therefore for understanding neurochemistric change, this paper reviews recent studies of PET and SPECT about substance use disorders.
