Objective:In this study, the authers intended to find the relationships between alcohol use and severity of depression and anxiety in alcoholics and normal controls. Method:The subjects were 109 male patients with alcohol use disorder (DSMIV) at least 2 weeks after admission at Seoul Municipal Eunpyong hospital and 60 male social drinkers. Each of these subjects was assessed by the Zung self-rating depression scale and the Zung self-rating Anxiety scale. The sociodemographic and clinical chracteristics between alcoholics and normal controls were compared by self-administed questionnaires. The method for statistical analysis was used by SAS (version 8.2). Results: The results of this study were as follows:1) The alcoholic group showed stastically significant higher mean score on the the Zung self-rating depression and Anxiety scale than the control group (p<0.01). 2) In the correlation analysis between the severity of depression and anxiety, there were significant correlations each group (r=0.496, p<0.01;r=0.457, p<0.01). 3) In the alcoholic group, depression and anxiety had no correlation with the amount of alcohol drinking, but anxiety was correlated with the occupation (p<0.01). 4) In the normal controls, depression was correlated with the amount of alcohol drinking (r=0.26, p<0.05), but there was no correlation with the amount of alcohol drinking. Conclusion:Alcoholic patients were much depressed and anxious than the control groups. In social drinkers, depression was correlated with the amount of alcohol drinking. These results suggest that the alcohol use should be significantly related with depression even in social drinkers.
