IT 교양영어 ESP 커리큘럼이 학습자 전공 영어 표현 능력과 흥미도에 미치는 영향

The Impact of IT- converged ESP Curriculum on English Learners Expressive Skills and Interests in their Major Fields

본 연구는 IT내용을 기반으로 한 English for Specific Purpose(이하 ESP IT) 영어 수업이 학습자 영어말하기, 쓰기, 전공 관련 발표 능력, 전공 관련 흥미도, 이해도, 직업 및 진로 관련 흥미도(이하 7개 영역)에 영향을 주는지 살펴보는 연구이다. 서울 소재 남녀공학 종합대학에서 실행중인 IT영어 수업을 수강하는 84명의 대학생에게 2016년 1학기 15주간의 수업 후 7개 영역관련 인식변화를 측정하는 사전 사후 질문지를 첫 주와 마지막 주에 각각 제공하였다. SPSS를 사용한 t-검정을 실시하여 본 수업이 7개 영역에 대한 이해도 및 흥미도에 변화를 주었는지 사전 사후 결과 분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 학습자들은 IT 영어 수업 이후 전공영역 말하기 및 쓰기 자신감 향상을 보였으며, 전공영역 이해도, 다양성, 진로 및 직업 흥미도에도 변화가 있었다. 하지만 전공 영어 발표 능력 향상에는 별다른 인식 변화가 없었는데 이는 수업 차시 분배 및 학생 수의 제약으로 인한 발표 기회 제한 등의 한계점이 작용한 것으로 풀이된다. 본 연구는 급변하는 산업사회의 특성에 맞춘 수요를 반영하 는 ESP IT 영어수업 효과 발견에 의의가 있다. 또한 IT의 다양한 이슈를 영어로 접 목한 상호작용 중심 구성주의 교수법을 접목하는 다양한 ESP관련 쓰기, 읽기, 어휘, 발표하기 관련 연구로 확장하는 향후 연구를 제언 할 것이다.

This study purports to report ESP learners (1) expressive skills including speaking and writing and (2) their interests and understanding about major field including future career and job sectors. A total of 84 participants enrolled at a university located in Seoul completed a pre-post perception - analysis - questionnaire (hereafter PAQ) containing 7 factors(e.g., speaking, writing, understanding about major fields, understanding about future career, interests about major field, interests about future career, interests about job sectors). The PAQ results portrayed that the learning experience through this ESP curriculum helped them to improve their (1) ability of speaking and writing and (2) understanding about major fields and future career, and (3) interests about major field, future career, and job sectors. However, participants did not perceive that they improved their ability of English presentation skills through this curriculum. Further studies concerning how learners perception of English presentation skills differed from English speaking and writing since speaking and writing can be regarded as the fundamental skills of presentation. Pedagogical implications for improving learners’ perceptions about L2 presentation in order to develop their professional L2 literacy were also presented.
