Objectives:The effect of naltrexone on conditioned physiological responses induced by alcohol related cue (ARC) was studied. Methods:Entered were 16 hospitalized patients with alcohol dependence who showed ARC-induced increase of alcohol craving for a study using placebo controlled crossover design. Either 50 mg of naltrexone or placebo was given for 7 days followed by 7 days of washout period and 7 days of placebo or naltrexone in a crossover design. Measured were changes of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial blood pressure, pulse rate and alcohol craving induced by a neutral and alcohol related cue and the amount of salivation during exposure to the same cues. Results:1) The ARC induced a significant increase in salivation and naltrexone blocked the increase of salivation and alcohol craving. 2) The ARC showed a tendency to increase systolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure and naltrexone blocked these effects. 3) The ARC and naltrexone did not show any effect on diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate. Conclusion:These results suggest that naltrexone has antagonizing effect on certain ARC-induced conditioned physiological responses.
