Pathological Gambling Among Alcohol Dependent Inpatients

Objective:1) The authors compared the lifetime occurrence rate of probable pathological gambling among alcohol dependent inpatients with that among control group in the general population. 2) The authors compared the alcohol addiction rate among gamblers anonymous group with that among control group in the general population. 3) In addition, the authors investigated comparative characteristics of alcohol dependent inpatient with and without probable pathological gambling. Method:The subject were 108 alcohol dependent inpatient, 111 control group, 36 GA gamblers. Probable pathological gambling was assessed with Korean South Oaks Gambling Screen(KSOGS). Alcohol addiction(abuse or dependence) was diagnosed by DSM-Ⅳ criteria. Result:1) the rate of lifetime probable pathological gambling:19.4%(21 of 108) in alcohol dependent inpatient and 2.9%(3 of 104) in control group 2) the rate of alcohol addiction:30.6%(11 of 36) in GA group and 6.3%(7 of 111) in control group 3) alcohol dependent inpatient with pathological gambling were significantly more likely to have family gambling problem, higher amount of the bet in one day than those without pathological gambling. alcohol dependent inpatient with pathological gambling had more alcohol drinking, smoking, coffee during gambling behaviors. To be opposed, those without pathological gambling had same or less amount alcohol drinking, smoking, coffee during gambling behaviors. and patients with pathological gambling had more anxiety illness, other psychiatric familial loading than patient without pathological gambling. Conclusion:Pathological gambling is substantially more prevalent among alcohol-dependent inpatients than in the general population. Also, Alcohol addiction is substantially more prevalent among GA gamblers than in the general population. Alcohol dependent inpatient with pathological gambling differ from other alcohol dependent inpatient in some gambling related characteristics but not in most sociodemographic characteristics.
