Iran ranks second for number of executions after China, and first for per capita executions in the world. Capital punishment is a legal penalty in Iran. According to the Islamic Penal Code of Iran revised in 2013, crimes punishable by death include murder, rape, adultery, sodomy, drug trafficking, armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, and treason. Due to the increasing number of executions and the persistence of practices that contravene international human rights law relating to the death penalty, international human rights organizations like Amnesty International, International Federation for Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, and Iran Human Rights blame the Iranian government for her unfair judiciary system and unjust penal code. They insist that the Iranian government has to implement gender-neutral age of majority, end to sentencing and execution of juvenile offenders, restrict the scope of the death penalty, and an end to public executions.
