Clinical Characteristics of Internet Addiction

인터넷 중독은 인터넷 보급이후 새로이 발생한 ‘행위중독’의 일종으로 ‘과도한 인터넷 사용에 대한 집착 및 사용시간에 대 한 조절실패, 이로 인한 의미있는 사회, 직업 및 기타 다른 중요 한영역의 기능의 손상과 불편감’으로 정의할 수 있다. 인터넷 중독은 사용하는 절대시간이라는 양적인 측면보다 그로 인해 발생하는 부적응적 행동을 중심으로 이해해야 한다. 인터넷 중독을 평가할 때 주의력결핍과잉행동장애, 우울증, 강박증, 사회공포증, 학습장애와 같은 일차적 원인 질환의 존재 가능성을 평가하고, 동시에 대인관계, 가정 및 직장의 스트레스와 같은 환경적 요소도 평가하는 것이 중요하다.

MInternet addiction is a novel clinical problem which is characterized by overindulgence of internet access or PC using, repeated control difficulties, and psychosocial dysfunction due to internet related behaviors. This article overviewed the definition of internet addiction and controversial concept of inter-net addiction in the name of ‘behavioral addiction’. Authors re-viewed current findings associated with etiology, cormorbidity, epidemiology of internet addiction. Specific clinical characteristics and symptom manifestations, possible subtypes were presented and several proposed diagnostic criteria and assess-ing tools will be described.
