Searching for effective vocabulary teaching: Focusing on secondary English teachers’ responses.

This study aims at searching for effective vocabulary teaching methods in secondary schools. To accomplish the objective, the researcher planned a teacher training session for the secondary English teachers, and collected data by surveying the participating teachers before and after the session. In order to guide the direction of the study, the researcher reviewed relevant literature and set up three research tasks. The data analysis revealed three major results. First, vocabulary teaching methods in secondary English instructions are different depending on each teacher. They spend different time and frequencies on teaching vocabulary. Second, teachers who participated in the training session perceived that teaching vocabulary is not only necessary, but also important. Their perception in teaching vocabulary has been changed, and they indicated that teacher education in teaching vocabulary should be provided. Finally, the study explored effective vocabulary teaching methods based on the participating teachers’ responses after the training session and created guidelines using them.
