A Survey on Adult Learners Needs for Daegeum(大笒) Education Program

With the problematic that program for adults learning Daegeum for amateurs should be different from that for adolescents learning Daegeum for professionals, this study aims to investigate adult learners needs for Daegeum education programs for a hobby. Needs survey consists of two areas: the backgrounds and characteristics of adult learners who participated in the Daegeum program, and the composition of the program. The survey results are as follows: first, most of the adult learners who have participated in Daegeum education program are male, over the age of forty. Many of them have bachelor’s degree and income of more than 3 million won a month. In addition, most of them have not experienced traditional music education while in school. Secondly, their purpose of participation in Daegeum education program is for their hobby and leisure. However, they wanted to play advanced level of music. In addition, they preferred jeongganbo(정간보, 井間譜) to the mixture of jeongganbo and staff(오선보, 五線譜). What they thought the most difficult in playing Daegeum was the skills of voicing and breathing. The survey results imply that adult learners have unique and complicated needs for Daegeum education program and suggest that Daegeum professional performers need to develop education program in tune with those adult learners needs.
