The objective of this study was to examine how small group discussions about complications in picture books affect five-year-old children s verbal activities and to provide basic information for developing effective teaching-learning methods. The subjects of this study were 12 children of a five-year-old class at C Kindergarten in G City as the experimental group, and another 12 at S Kindergarten in the same city as the control group. The experimental group read picture books related to conflict situation and participated in small group discussion, and the control group talked with their teacher about conflict situation. The children s verbal activity was measured with the linguistic competence test adapted by Jang Yeong-ae (1981) for the level of 4-6-year-old children based on previous studies (Lee Yeon-seop et al., 1980) and used by Kim Youn Sook (2008). Through these experiment, the result shows that small group discussions about complications in picture books help children to improve their vocabulary, language comprehension and expressive language sills. This suggests that small group discussion activities about complications in picture books for enhancing linguistic competence can be a new teaching-learning method for verbal activity in the field of early childhood education.
