This study aims to investigate the characteristics of basic-level high school students when solving chemistry questions. Thus, this study analyzed the percentage of correct answers for each achievement level of national-level SAT (scholastic achievement test) questions conducted between 2005 and 20009 for 10th graders in high school. Particularly, this study analyzed pairs of questions, such as questions whose rate of correct answers was almost the same in the entire students but different a lot in basic-level students, questions whose rate of correct answers became lower in mid-level students but higher in basic-level students and questions whose rate of correct answers was almost the same in mid-level students but became lower in basic-level students. Then, on the results above, this study analyzed the characteristics of basic-level students by discovering reasons for such phenomena. With the results of this research, it was found that basic-level students understood figures expressed with particle (ion) models best, followed by graphs. However, they were found to lack an ability to quantitatively analyze through tables, and hardly discovered any information through figures showing experimental circumstances. Besides, some of them had memorization-based knowledge, but they were found to be short of understanding about the definition or principle of terms. Accordingly, when a new chapter starts, it is necessary to instruct them to exactly understand the definition of scientific terms by introducing concepts in a form of information so that they may accept it more easily. In addition, by supplementing the scientific concepts they lack through after-school class, it is needed to help them not to have difficulty in the follow-up class.
